The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, also known as UNC, UNC Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina, or simply Carolina, is a public research university located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. It is the flagship of the 17 campuses of the University of North Carolina system. After being chartered in 1789, the university first began enrolling students in 1795, which also allows it to be one of three schools to claim the title of the oldest public university in the United States. Scholarships

We want Carolina to be affordable to any student who earns admission. As part of this effort, we work hard to keep costs as low as possible. For both North Carolinians and out-of-state students, tuition here is lower than at most other top universities in the country.

Another way we foster affordability is through scholarships. Some of our scholarships are available to students who demonstrate financial need; these scholarships require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA) and the CSS/PROFILE be submitted to Carolina by the priority deadline of March 1. Other scholarships are awarded on the basis of extraordinary strengths in one or more areas. Some of these scholarships require separate applications, but most require only the application for admission.

A third way we promote affordability is by helping students identify scholarships that aren’t administered by Carolina.  We’ve listed some of them below; for a fuller listing, please click here

University Scholarships Awarded on the Basis of Demonstrated Financial Need

Carolina Covenant

With the Carolina Covenant, eligible students whose family income falls at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines (about $44,700 for a family of four) can graduate from Carolina without having to borrow a penny – 100% of their demonstrated need is met through grants and federal work study.

Carolina Works Scholarship:

The Federal Work Study Program allows qualified recipients to earn part of their financial aid through employment on campus or in community service agencies. Students may select from a wide variety of available jobs to meet their interests, skills and career plans.

Carolina Computing Initiative

The Carolina Computing Initiative (CCI) ensures that students have access to high-quality and affordable technology. As a part of CCI, all students are required to own a laptop, and grants are available to help eligible students purchase their laptops.

Noteworthy Firsts Scholarship:

Named to honor courageous people who represent important “firsts” in the University’s history, these scholarships recognize the legacy of these individuals by helping current students attend.
