Funding your course of study

The information which follows is intended to help you to identify sources of financial support before your course begins.

Please Note: The information given below is intended as a general guide. It does not represent an exhaustive list of all available funding. You are encouraged to apply to all sources of funds for which you may be eligible. International students should approach their local British Council for information on local funding.

The level of competition for most of the awards mentioned here is extremely high and candidates are usually assessed on past, and potential, academic performance. If you will require a grant in order to undertake your studies, your application should be made as early in the year as possible. Applications received after March cannot be considered for most scholarships.

The majority of international postgraduate students taking courses in the School of International Development are sponsored by their Governments, their employers, or an agency such as the British Council.

You should not begin a new course unless you are confident that you have enough money for the duration of your course, bearing in mind that fees and expenses are likely to increase annually. Although it is increasingly possible for international students to work part-time while studying in the UK, (part-time earning levels are about £6 – £9 per hour, and this is currently restricted to 20 hours per week by the UK Border Agency) you should not rely on funding your studies through vacation or part-time work since your earnings are likely to be low in relation to your expenses.  The UK Border Agency requires you to show proof that you can fund your full tuition fees and high levels of living costs in order to obtain a Tier 4 Student Visa.

50% Final Year Undergraduate Continuation Scholarship

Current final year UEA undergraduate students who gain a 1st class degree and progress onto a postgraduate course in September 2018 will receive a 50% fee reduction scholarship. Those who do not gain a 1st class degree will still be eligible for the 10% UEA Alumni Scholarship outlined below. Terms and conditions apply.

UEA Alumni 10% Scholarship

A scholarship of a 10% fee reduction is available to UEA Alumni looking to return for postgraduate study at UEA in September 2018. Terms and conditions apply.

School of International Development Excellence Awards for International Students

School of International Development Scholarships

The School of International Development is offering a £1,000 fee waiver to all international students who have obtained the equivalent of a UK 1st Class degree.
How to apply: All eligible candidates with a 1st Class degree to whom the School have made an offer are automatically given the £1,000 fee waiver.

School of International Development Full Fees Scholarship

A full fee award may be offered to one international taught applicant on the basis of academic excellence (e.g. first class degree) and their personal statement.
How to apply: All eligible candidates to whom the School have made an offer are automatically considered for nomination.
Deadline for Applications (full fee scholarships): 31 March 2018.

Please note that all applicants are expected to have met the School’s English language requirements and been offered and accepted a place on the course by this date.  Successful applicants will be contacted by the admissions department.

School of International Development Scholarships for students from Japan, South Korea, USA and Latin America

International Development Excellence Scholarships – partial fees awards may be offered on the basis of academic excellence and personal statement.
Eligibility: USA (2 scholarships of £6,000), Japan (5 scholarships of £3000), South Korea (1 scholarship of £6000), Latin America (1 scholarship of £6000).
How to apply: All eligible offer holders from South Korea, USA and Latin America are automatically considered for nomination. All Japanese offer holders will be contacted in early March and invited to submit a formal application for a scholarship.
Deadline for applications: 30 April 2018 (28 February 2018 for Japanese applicants)

Other scholarships available to International students

General (Non-UK Residents)

Students planning to come to Britain to study should seek information from their own Ministry of Education and from the nearest British Council Office, British Embassy or British High Commission. Students already in the UK can obtain information from their own Embassy or High Commission and the British Council regional or London offices. Further information on funding may be obtained from the UK Council for Overseas Students Affairs.

Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries. Scholarships can be offered annually by the UK to commonwealth citizens resident in a Commonwealth country other than Britain itself. Awards are for university postgraduate study or research, and are administered by the Department for International Development.
Eligibility: International students from a Commonwealth country.
How to apply: Candidates must apply through the appropriate agency in their country of normal residence.

Joint Japan/ World Bank Global Scholarship Programme

The World Bank Scholarship Program and the Fellowships Program are vehicles for knowledge sharing and capacity building in the developing world. The Programs provide opportunities for graduate and postgraduate studies leading to master’s and doctoral degrees in development-related fields for mid-career professionals from eligible developing countries. Applicants must be a national of a World Bank member country, under 45 years of age, hold a bachelor’s degree with superior grades, have two years of recent employment in economic development activities and have been admitted to a university renowned for development research and teaching.

Said Foundation Masters Scholarships

The Said Foundation offers twenty postgraduate scholarships annually to outstanding individuals from Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan who demonstrate the potential to become leaders and innovators of change.

There are no restrictions on academic subjects but priority will be given to candidates who can demonstrate that their subject will enable them to contribute to the development of their home country.

Applications are restricted to the Foundation’s partner universities in the UK. A full list of partner universities can be found on the Said Foundation website.

Eligibility Criteria for 2019/20

– Hold Syrian, Palestinian, Lebanese or Jordanian nationality.

– Priority is given to candidates who are resident in the Foundation’s target countries of Syria, Palestine, Lebanon and Jordan. The Foundation will, however, consider Syrians residing elsewhere due to current circumstances in Syria;

– Hold an undergraduate degree that is equivalent of a UK 2.1 degree or higher at the time of submitting.

– Demonstrate leadership potential in their chosen field or sector.

– Have applied to an eligible course at a Foundation partner university (or have legitimate exceptional reasons for applying for a non-partner university).

– Have work experience relevant to their field of study and a clear career path on completion of their studies and return to their home country or region. If an candidate lacks work experience the Foundation will consider experience gained from voluntary or community activities or participation in activities whilst at university;

–  Meet the Foundation’s English language requirements (IELTS of 6.0 overall with at least 6.0 in each band). Some universities have higher requirements so candidates are expected to meet these requirements too. Evidence is required that candidates meet their proposed university’s English language conditions;

– Uploaded all the required documentation to their application.

– Priority will be given to candidates who hold existing teaching posts at universities in their home country and who can clearly demonstrate the need for the proposed research in their home country will be considered.

– Successful candidates are required to sign a binding undertaking to apply the skills and knowledge they have gained in the Foundation’s target countries.

NFU Mutual Charitable Trust Centenary Award – MA Agriculture and Rural Development

In 2015 NFU Mutual, the UK’s leading rural insurer, is once again offering the Centenary Award for postgraduate students in agriculture.

The award gives annual bursaries to pay up to 75% of course fees for selected post graduate students in agriculture (Masters or PhD).

Eligibility: Home, EU and Overseas applicants who have gained, or are expected to gain, a 2:1 or above (or international equivalent) in agriculture or a closely related degree, and have been offered a place on a Masters or PhD course in agriculture in the UK starting in September 2017.

Application deadline: The details of this award have not been confirmed for 2017 entry.
