Carnegie Mellon provides qualified students with need-based institutional grants and scholarships to help fund the expenses of college. Grants and scholarships are considered to be ‘gift aid,’ meaning that neither amount has to be paid back.

Grants

Grants can be either governmentally funded at the federal or state level or institutionally funded. Grants are awarded to students who demonstrate financial need. Students wishing to apply for grant funds should reference our Applying for Aid instructions.

Scholarships

All scholarships are awarded within the context of financial need. Carnegie Mellon offers the Presidential Scholarship to candidates with strong academic and artistic performance along with demonstrated leadership, service and community involvement. Students do not complete a separate application process to be considered for a Presidential Scholarship. In order to be considered for the scholarship, candidates must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS PROFILE. Eligibility for the scholarship is determined through a review of both financial need and merit. Additionally, ROTC Scholarships are available to qualified undergraduate students. We also encourage students to research outside scholarship opportunities. Please review the university’s outside scholarship policy for more details. Further details about all scholarships and policies can be found below:

1. Presidential Scholarship

The Carnegie Mellon Presidential Scholarship Program was established in 2014 to attract exceptionally gifted prospective students and to address financial barriers in supporting these students’ desire to attend Carnegie Mellon University. This prestigious program provides both financial support and high-level recognition for this exceptional group of students. A Presidential Scholarship is renewable for eight (8) semesters of undergraduate education (10 semesters for students in the School of Architecture), as long as satisfactory academic progress and full-time enrollment are maintained.

Students do not complete a separate application process to be considered for a Presidential Scholarship. To be considered for a Presidential Scholarship, incoming freshman applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS PROFILE. A student and his/her family must demonstrate some level of financial need based on the FAFSA and CSS PROFILE information in order to qualify for a Presidential Scholarship. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to be considered for Presidential Scholarships.

2. ROTC Scholarships

A Reserve Officer Training Corp – ROTC Scholarship may be available to Carnegie Mellon undergraduates. Students interested in discussing ROTC opportunities are encourage to contact the Carnegie Mellon Steel City Naval ROTC at 412.268.5109.

Air Force ROTC Scholarships

The Air Force ROTC program offers two, three and three-and-a-half year scholarships to qualified undergraduate Carnegie Mellon students. Scholarship amounts vary. Carnegie Mellon is a crosstown member of Detachment 730 at the University of Pittsburgh. Completion of the AFROTC program leads to a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

Army ROTC Scholarships

The Army ROTC program offers two, three and four year scholarships based on student merit. Scholarships cover full tuition and fees plus $1,200 per year for books. All contracted students also receive a monthly stipend of $300 to $500 per month. Carnegie Mellon has a company at the Three Rivers Battalion headquartered at the University of Pittsburgh.

Naval-Marine Corps ROTC Scholarships

The Naval ROTC program offers two, three and four year scholarships based on competitive national and regional selection. Scholarships cover full tuition and fees, $750 per year for books, and a monthly stipend of $250 to $400. The Carnegie Mellon Steel City Naval ROTC is considered one of the finest ROTC units in the country.

3. Outside Scholarships

Carnegie Mellon encourages students to pursue outside scholarship opportunities. If you receive outside scholarships, they’ll be used to meet your unmet financial need and/or offset loans and work study.

Outside Scholarship Policy

Institutional grants and scholarships won’t be reduced due to the receipt of outside scholarships unless one of the following occurs:

• If a student received federal grants or loans, these funds, in combination with any other grants/scholarships, cannot exceed your financial need.
• All outside scholarships, in combination with all aid received, cannot exceed your cost of attendance.

Outside scholarships are not from federal, state or institutional (Carnegie Mellon) sources. Examples of outside scholarships are: Coca Cola, Gates Millennium, Rotary, etc.
