LMU Munich Scholarship, Germany

Budgeting, Scholarships, and Jobs

Living Costs

Here’s a basic outline of what you should budget for monthly living costs in Munich:

  • Rooms in private housing including utilities: €350–€600
  • Rooms in university housing: €300, or €370 including utilities
  • Health insurance: €80
  • Meals: €200–€250
  • Mobile phone: €15–€30
  • Public transportation: €33

Since housing will be one of your primary expenses in Munich—and it comes in a wide range of types and prices—visit our Housing section to help you figure out what to expect.

And there’s good news! With a valid student identity card, you’ll have access to steep price reductions for public transportation and Munich’s many cultural events (like theatre, concerts, museums, and more), as well as at the many on campus student cafeterias and cafes.

Tuition and Fees

In Germany, students don’t have to pay tuition fees for most programs. Education is seen as a public good—a human right accessible to everyone. And international students are seen as a vital part of the German higher education system. There are tuition fees for summer programs and some of our English-taught Master programs, so you should check the individual course for details.

While there is no tuition for standard programs, all students are required to pay a fee of €129,40 for student services (€62) and the basic “semester ticket” (€67,40) entitling students to travel within the Munich “MVV” regional transport network in the evenings and weekends. (You can also get a top-up card called IsarCard Semester 24/7 for €197,70 per semester that gives you unlimited travel.)

Funding and Scholarships

International students are eligible for limited scholarships and funding opportunities throughout the State of Bavaria and Germany. Some available scholarships include:

Third-Year Scholarships

LMU offers some special scholarship programs for master and bachelor students in their third year. Master students can request information on scholarships from the coordinators of their departments, and bachelor students can request information from the International Office of LMU.

Deutschlandstipendium

Read about the grant (in German) of €300/month for particularly talented students including international students.

Study Credit BAFÖG (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz)

BAFÖG is a need-based grant and loan (in German). It is available to German students; International students can apply if they meet all the requirements and plan to stay in Germany after completing the program.

Doctoral Student Funding

Most doctoral students finance their studies by working for the university as student or scientific assistants in their academic department. Some may also receive funding within the scope of the DFG Research Training Groups or the Doctorate Programs of the Elite Network of Bavaria. Scholarship programs for gifted students, countless foundations, the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts, and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) all offer individual funding for doctoral students. Learn about the opportunities on the LMU Graduate Center website.

Employment Opportunities

Interested in joining the many other international students in Germany who fund their studies with part-time jobs? Students from the EU or EEA may work like German students do, while other international students may work 120 full or 240 half days in a year—and that work can’t be self-employment or freelance. This dedicated pageexplains a few rules and regulations to keep in mind when looking for work in Bavaria.

Things to keep in mind when considering funding your studies with a student job:

  • Most student employment requires reasonable knowledge of the German language.
  • The job schedule has to work with your class and study schedule. Don’t forget that attending your classes is required!
