In reply to the question of why the universe and all things are in order and not in chaos, atheists simply deny that there is any order. They say that what we observe as order is simply in the nature of things. The universe could not have developed according to any other arrangement. Nor, according to them, could there have been chaos, no matter how different the universe might have been. But they can’t say why.
They have no explanation for why atoms are ordered with a nucleus in the center Containing protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons circling the nucleus in one, two, three or more shells (layers). Why are they arranged in several shells? Why not in one single shell, seeing that every electron in the various shells is no different from any other? Why aren’t there as many shells as there are electrons, such as, for instance, 92 shells around the nucleus of uranium? Who fixed the number of electrons, the number of shells and the physical properties that go with them, and which, in turn, play a key role in combination of single atoms into useful molecules?
The solar system is another example of order a sun with a family of planets at various distances from it. The earth happens to be in the eco-zone, wherein alone life can originate and survive. If one planet were removed, the rest would be disturbed and the earth would most likely move out of the eco-zone, effacing all life. The huge outer planets protect the earth from bombardment by large asteroids. Without this protection, the earth would have been reduced to a barren body with huge craters and no life. The Creator speaks through the Qur’an:
“And We have beautified the earthly firmament with lamps [i.e., stars], and as protection” (41:12)
No planet escapes from its orbit although, as admitted by some scientists, there is no reason why it should not gradually move away from the sun and ultimately fly out into space. It is difficult enough to balance a piece of iron between two magnets on a table so that it is not pulled toward one of the two. But here are eight major planets with their own satellites and five dwarf planets (Pluto has recently been demoted by scientists to the status of a dwarf planet. The other dwarfs are Ceres, Haumea, Makemake and Eris) revolving around the sun, while their moons revolve around the mother planets. Yet the balance is maintained for the system to remain in what is known as “dynamic equilibrium.” The balance of the gravitational forces and their relative distances is so well proportioned that none can escape its course. We observe here a superlative kind of order.
And consider the expansion of the universe. It is not that every planet is distancing itself from others, or even that galaxies are moving away from others; but it is groups of galaxies that are speeding away from other groups of galaxies, almost at the speed of light. In other words, the expansion observed is only at the level of groups of galaxies.
Why? Who is responsible for this arrangement of the universe if not its Creator? The same Creator that revealed to mankind in the Qur’an:
“And the heaven We constructed with strength and indeed, We are [its] expander. (51:47, The plural form “We” has been used to denote the Creator’s grandeur and power)
