How Can We Find God?
Looking for God? Get Reasonable!
When people ask how to find God, the question undoubtedly issues from the instinctive belief in Him that resides within every human soul. Deep in their hearts they recognize that this adventure of life cannot end with nothingness and that a time must come when they will return to their Lord. But how can they prepare for that encounter rather than be taken by surprise? God answers this question in a revelation to His Prophet:
“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.” (2:186)
God is saying here that He is not far away. He is near, not in a physical sense, but in His knowledge of every aspect of creation. He responds to prayer when called upon alone and not in conjunction with a false deity of people’s design. Therefore, human beings need to respond actively to the faith He has planted deep in their hearts and call upon Him; they will find that He responds to them. Once they discover that true peace and happiness cannot be found in anything other than Him, they will seek to know God better and strive for His approval.
But the problem is, as the Qur’an itself states:
“Most of them believe not in God except While they associate others with Him. (12:106)
Polytheism takes many different forms. It means attributing divine characteristics to others beside the Creator, worshipping and obeying others instead of Him. Even though it can be argued today that all religions accept the same God, He has been obscured in other faiths by innumerable gods, goddesses, idols, avatars, holy men, saints and spirits. This gave rise to the idea prevalent today, and was perhaps reinforced by the influence of atheism, that every religion has its own deities and that religions are exclusive doctrines evolved from circumstances and superstitions. But it is Islam that has helped the world to rediscover the true God.
